Every customer is unique
Design generally accounts for a maximum of 5% of the total cost of product development, although a design investment is often directly related to increased sales. A new study, carried out by SVID (the Swedish Industrial Design Foundation), Teknikföretagen (the Association of Swedish Engineering Industries) and STD (The Swedish Federation of Consulting Engineers and Architects), shows that companies that have increased their design investments grow faster, export more and are five times as innovative as companies that do not work actively with design.

Although a small percentage of the cost, the 5% that go to design may expose the company to great risks and additional costs if the wrong decision is made at an early stage of the product development process. However, if design is used as a strategic means of communication with consistent follow-up during the product development process, the 5% may turn out to be a very good investment - in terms of positioning, corporate identity and profitable business.

The design strategy ensures that the company’s product communication corresponds to the desired market development.
